During the Reign of Charles IX, Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, ordered a new calendar, the Gregorian Calendar, to replace the old Julian Calendar. It changed the order of the months, and called for New Year's Day to be celebrated January 1 instead of April 1.
However, in France many people, because of bad communications either did not learn of it or refused to accept it. Other people began to make fun of these people, sending them on fool's errands or trying to trick them into believing something false.
April Fools Day began to be celebrated in England and the American Colonies in 1751. Great Britain and the Gregorian Calendar
